When one thinks of “Heart Healthy,” focus is often on the physical wellness of one’s heart. Thoughts of what we eat and physical activity or generally primary. Truth is, what must be primary is protecting the emotional wellness of one’s heart.
Emotions are motivators. They can drive what one does, as well as the frequency of what we do.
One of the most challenging emotional times in my life was experiencing the effects of hurricane Katrina. Yes, it’s been nearly 17 years. Yet, when I think of the emotional trauma, I know that it was one of those times in life that God carried me. I lost. I lost my business. I suffered temporary lost of my home. I lost to rip-off contractors, I lost wellness, I lost sleep, and for a brief moment, I lost me.
My heart ached. Forget physical wellness. Exercising was the last thing on me mind. I had to repair what was broken. I had to repair my heart. I had to somehow make my heart healthy again.
It wasn’t until within my heart I could identify the good in that experience that I was able to emotionally become heart healthy.
Life will happen, and not always in the manner of our desire. When life makes an unfavorable turn, protect your heart. Focus on the little things you can do in the mist of restoring your heart to its healthy place. And whatever you do, don’t go it alone. The heart is meant to be shared. Even if but for a moment.
